Beneath Mount Victoire in the heart of Provence, stands Aix En Provence, the historical capital of Provence. The painter Cezanne spent time here, as did famous 19th century writers such as Stendhal, Zola and Mistral who made Aix-en-Provence the setting for their novels. Visiting this magnificent town it's easy to understand why. Grand boulevards crisscross the centre, lined with tall, elegant buildings whose wrought iron balconies look over the wide pavements below, dotted with leafy plane trees, cafes and restaurants. This is essential Provence. Like much of the region, Aix-en-Provence dates back to pre-Roman times and subsequently through a rich and colourful history, with buildings dating back to each era. Today, this lively university town bustles with life, commerce and entertainment and is a perfect place to holiday either near the town, or in the surrounding villages amid the beautiful lavender fields and olive groves of Les Alpilles and the Luberon.
