Known as the 'Perfume Capital of the World', Grasse has
had a prospering perfume industry since the 18th Century. Today
perfume is still a flourishing business with Grasse producing over
70% of France's natural aromas for perfume and food flavouring.
Many of the old 'parfumeries' still operate, such as Molinard,
Fragonard and Galimard and organise visits where you can create
your own, unique fragrance. Grasse is located just 5 km from the
coast and commands panoramic seaviews. It is a dense maze of
tightly cobbled streets winding up the hillside. Each is lined with
tall ochre buildings opening sporadically into brightly sunlit
squares where locals sip coffee and play petanque. The top of the
hill is dominated by Grasse cathedral, an imposing church
surrounded by historic palaces and museums. From this envious
position, Grasse was able to control the region including the
nearby villages of Cabris, Peymeinade and Maganosc which today
offer luxury private villas and amazing views.
